LA Opera: La Traviata (2006, debut); 63 different operas and over 410 performances to date. He has been Richard Seaver Music Director since 2006. Later this season, he will conduct St. Matthew Passion and Aida, as well as The Three Women of Jerusalem at the Cathedral.
Career highlights: He has led virtually every major North American and European orchestra and over 270 performances at the Metropolitan Opera. This season, he became Artistic Advisor of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He previously was Principal Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of the RAI in Torino (2016-20), Music Director of the Ravinia Festival, the summer home of the Chicago Symphony (2005-2015), Principal Conductor of the Paris National Opera (1995-2004), General Music Director of the City of Cologne (1989-2002), Music Director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic (1983-91) and Music Director of the Cincinnati May Festival (1979-2016). He has won three Grammy Awards and was awarded France’s Légion d’Honneur.

Career highlights: The internationally celebrated choreographer began his career performing with the Stuttgart Ballet before beginning a four-year tenure directing the Frankfurt Ballet. Since 1973, he has been director and chief choreographer of the Hamburg Ballet. Under his leadership, the company became one of the leading European troupes and has earned international acclaim. Founder of the School of the Hamburg Ballet, he also launched Germany’s National Youth Ballet. He has worked as a choreographer with the major opera companies of Vienna, Munich, Milan and Paris; the Royal Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, Mariinsky Ballet and National Ballet of Canada. With over 169 works to his credit, his choreography focuses on the preservation of ballet tradition, while giving his works a modern dramatic framework.

LA Opera: Resident Conductor since 2012, he made his LA Opera conducting debut with La Traviata (2009). He has conducted 15 productions to date including, most recently, The Magic Flute (2019).
About: He conducted San Francisco Opera’s 2017 world premiere of John Adams’ Girls of the Golden West, which he also conducted for the Dutch National Opera. He has conducted Rigoletto, Tosca, La Bohème, La Traviata, Carmen and Madama Butterfly at Wolf Trap Opera with the National Symphony Orchestra; John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary at the San Francisco Symphony and Ravinia Festival; Vivaldi’s Griselda at Santa Fe Opera; and many concerts with the LA Philharmonic. He is the Kiki & David Gindler Artistic Director of the LA Master Chorale, where he is celebrating his 20th anniversary season. His discography includes recordings with LAMC as well as DVDs of Il Postino and Gianni Schicchi from LA Opera.

About: An internationally regarded choral conductor, clinician, and educator, he became artistic director of the LACC in 2018. He has prepared choirs for appearances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestra, among others. From 2004 to 2017, he was artistic director of the American Boychoir, leading the ensemble in over 150 performances and up to five national and international tours annually. He conducted the American Boychoir on six recordings, led its performances on the Academy Awards and a 9/11 memorial service broadcast globally on CNN, and he was the music director on the film Boychoir, directed by François Girard. He has guest conducted children’s and youth choirs around the globe.
